The Truth About Caribbean Hurricane Season: A Travel Advisor's Perspective

Many travelers cross the Caribbean off their list during hurricane season without realizing they're missing out on some of the best travel opportunities. As a travel advisor who's navigated these waters for decades, let me share the truth.

Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, but that doesn't mean the entire Caribbean is at high risk for six months. The reality is much more nuanced.

The ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao) sit outside the hurricane belt and rarely experience direct hits. Even during peak season (August-October), these islands offer safe, sunny getaways with significantly reduced rates.

Conversely, the northern Caribbean—particularly the Bahamas, Cuba, eastern Dominican Republic, and the U.S. Virgin Islands—faces the highest risk, especially during September. These destinations have historically experienced the most frequent and severe hurricane impacts and are best avoided during peak season.

Early hurricane season (June-July) typically sees minimal storm activity while offering substantial savings.

Travel insurance remains essential, but understanding regional weather patterns can unlock incredible Caribbean experiences. The savviest travelers strategically choose their destinations and timing, taking advantage of fewer crowds and exceptional value while minimizing genuine risk.
